Bonner Nets Career High 38 Points in Loss

By Ben York,

Playing a scorching hot Silver Stars team that has won five of their last six games, the Mercury faced an uphill battle tonight especially considering it was Phoenix's fourth game on a season-high nine-day road trip.

Although the Mercury fought until the very end (literally), they lost a close one in San Antonio, 82-81.

Phoenix actually led by 13 points midway through the third quarter, but a 31-point fourth quarter from the Silver Stars (including 17 from Becky Hammon) ended up solidifying a San Antonio win.

"It was an exciting game to watch," Corey Gaines said after the win. "They were missing shots early on in the game (and) they started hitting them. They made a run and we were still up by three going into the fourth. (Danielle) Adams and Becky (Hammon) took over in the second half."

Not that it wasn't evident before, but it is now 100 percent confirmed: DeWanna Bonner is a superstar.

DB had 19 points in the first quarter alone a WNBA season high which puts her near some elite company. The record holder for most points in one quarter is someone the X-Factor knows pretty well Diana Taurasi (22).

Finishing with 38 points and a team-high eight rebounds, Bonner was 11-23 from the field and a perfect 13-13 from the charity stripe (tying the second most made in a game without a miss in franchise history). In fact, she single-handedly outscored the Silver Stars in the first quarter, 19-16. Additionally, her 38 points were the most scored in a WNBA game since July 18, 2010 (Cappie Pondexter 40).

In typical DeWanna Bonner fashion, she deflected her amazing game back to her teammates and their collective effort.

"I'm always looking to be aggressive," said Bonner. "I'm always looking to score. Tonight my shots kept falling so I kept shooting."

But Bonner (and the rest of the team, for that matter) would trade any individual accolades for a Mercury win.

"We lost," Bonner added. "We played a good first half, but they killed us on the offensive rebounds. We let (Danielle) Adams get going in the second half. She played a great game. She shot lights out in the second half; I don't know if she even missed a shot. They played well. They played like they wanted to win the game in the second half, and unfortunately we lost."

- DeWanna Bonner has scored 20 or more points nine times this season. She has scored under 16 points only once.

- Charde Houston has hit at least four 3-pointers in each of the last three games.

- An amazing feat for a point guard, prior to tonights game, Sammy Prahalis went the last seven games tallying four or more rebounds.

- The Mercury returns home to face the Atlanta Dream this Saturday, July 7, at 7:00 p.m. For tickets, visit
