PhoenixMercury.com: Welcome to Phoenix! What were some of the reasons you wanted to sign with the Mercury?

Shay Murphy: I wanted to play for Sandy [Brondello] because I've heard so many great things about her and believe that she would continue to help me develop as a player.

And, of course, who wouldn't want to play with the greatest player of all-time, Diana Taurasi?

PhoenixMercury.com: How would you describe your game for Mercury fans? How do you feel your game fits with this team?

Murphy: I am a very energetic player with a blue-collar mentality, willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win. It may be defending, rebounding or scoring on any given night.

I am a team-first type of player.

PhoenixMercury.com: How excited are you to join this years talented Mercury team?

Murphy: I've played with many great players before such as Tamika Catchings, Katie Douglas, Lauren Jackson, Maya Moore, Swin Cash, and Sylvia Fowles. Each of them has taught me something that has helped me become the player I am today.

I am really excited for the opportunity to play with this Mercury group. I have no doubt they will make me better as a player and a person; it's an honor to learn from them.

PhoenixMercury.com: As a competitor, youve faced the Mercury for many years. What kind of reputation does the organization have around the league?

Murphy: The Mercury is definitely known as up-tempo and fast. But more than anything for their scrappy mentality. Thats something I hope I can bring to the team, too.

PhoenixMercury.com: We spoke with a few of your previous teammates and each has said one of your greatest strengths is being team-oriented and easy to get along with. Has that been a conscious decision for you as a pro?

Murphy: Thanks to all my teammates in the past for that compliment! I attribute being a great teammate to having a humble spirit on and off the court. I am just so happy every day to play basketball at the highest level. So, why wouldnt I be happy and a positive teammate?

I'm blessed to even be a part of the league. I just hope my positive energy and gratefulness will spread and help the team in some way.
