Tonights 91-82 victory over the Sun was the game weve been waiting all year for.
That typical Mercury game where everything seemed to click. Where even though you knew the opposition would make a run to get things close, you never
doubted the Mercury would find a way to win. That game where you just had a feeling that almost every shot was going in (especially DeWanna Bonner 35
huge points). And if a shot wasnt going in, you knew there would be someone underneath the basket to clean it up (most notably Krystal Thomas 16
And when things got a little too close for comfort, you knew DeWanna Bonner would hit a big shot and none was bigger than her 3-pointer with under a
minute to play to seal Phoenixs victory.
The Mercury assisted on 18 of their 32 made shots, out-rebounded the Sun 45-21, forced 14 turnovers, and hit 11 3-pointers.
We were pretty pathetic in New Jersey, Diana Taurasi said after the game about the loss to New York two days prior. After the long flight, we got in
late the night before and we went out there and looked like a team that wasnt ready to play. Tonight we wanted to put a better effort out on the court and
we did that.
One thing that wont necessarily jump out at you in the box score was the rebound differential between Krystal Thomas and Olympian Tina Charles. Charles,
who normally grabs 11-14 rebounds per game, only had three tonight. Krystal Thomas, on the other hand, tallied 16 (seven offensive).
That is KT (Krystal Thomas), said Corey Gaines on Thomas production. She had 16 rebounds and they were go get rebounds. We hyped her up before saying
Tina gets a lot of offensive rebounds, Tina does this and she was probably trying to shut us up.
Alexis Hornbuckle played point guard for the majority of the night filling in for the injured Sammy Prahalis (shoulder, day-to-day). Buck was impressive
scoring eight points, dishing out five assists, and grabbing three rebounds. Diana Taurasi was the only other Mercury player in double-digits in scoring
with 16 points on 5-10 shooting.
We just wanted to come out and not have that again, it was kind of embarrassing, DeWanna Bonner said about the loss to the Liberty recently. But I just
came out aggressive and luckily my shots were falling. We made the right cuts and everything was just perfect tonight and we just wanted to come out and
show that we can play better basketball today.
The Mercury concludes their road trip in Indiana against the Fever this Sunday at 3 p.m. Phoenix time.
