2015 Rookie Roundtable

by Brad G. Faye, PhoenixMercury.com

While the destination may be the same for the top three selections of the Phoenix Mercury in the 2015 WNBA Draft, the paths of each certainly have their differences. Isabelle Harrison for example grew up in Nashville, Tennessee where it appeared only a matter of time before sports became a key component of her life. For Phoenician Promise Amukamara, her childhood consisted of watching Mercury games up close and personal. And for Alex Harden, basketball was one of several interests along with volleyball, track and biology. Having now heard their names announced as draft picks of the Phoenix Mercury, each of the three players are extremely excited for the opportunity to travel to Phoenix to join the organization. PhoenixMercury.com spoke with each of these three WNBA hopefuls to get their thoughts on being drafted by the team as well as their expectations moving forward.

PhoenixMercury.com: Where were you watching the WNBA Draft and what was your reaction to hearing you’d been drafted by the Mercury?

Isabelle Harrison: I was invited to the WNBA Draft this year which was a great experience. I was speechless when they announced my name and I was blessed that Phoenix wanted me to be a part of their team.

Alex Harden: I was at home watching the draft on my computer while doing some homework. I was speechless and am so grateful for the opportunity.

Promise Amukamara: I was in the living room with my family and I couldn’t believe it. I was in complete shock and excited for the opportunity.

PhoenixMercury.com What are some of the memories you’ve had growing up and watching the WNBA? Any specific memories involving the Phoenix Mercury?

Harrison: I just remember watching games and seeing women that were tall like me play against each other and having fun. Phoenix is a great team and I heard they have a great staff so I am excited to work with them.

Harden: I used to ask to go to a WNBA game every year for my birthday. I think the Phoenix Mercury are a great team. It is easy to see how well they work together both offensively and defensively, and you can see how flexible they are with the ability to switch screens.

Amukamara: I just remember always going to the Mercury games, and being a huge fan of Bridget Pettis and Jennifer Gillom and the passion they possessed on and off the court. My thoughts on the Phoenix Mercury is that they have grown tremendously as an organization and really made their mark as a profound contender in the league.

PhoenixMercury.com Looking ahead, what are some of the goals you would like to achieve as a WNBA player? How much are you looking forward to making the trip to Phoenix?

Harrison: As a WNBA player, I want to win a championship. I never got the chance to win a National Championship in college so to reach that achievement will be a dream come true. I want to extend my game to the next level. I am loping forward to coming to Phoenix because of the team and the environment out West. I want to see what life is outside of college.

Harden: My goals are to have a long career and doing anything needed to keep me on the team. I just want to bring an x-factor worth having on the Mercury. I’m so excited to make the trip to Phoenix. It’s the beginning of a new chapter of my life and I can’t wait to start it.

Amukamara: Some goals I would like to achieve as a WNBA player is first make the team, make a name for myself in the league, become a Defensive Player of the Year and also make the All-Star team. (Laughs) As far as the trip to Phoenix, it won’t be much of a trip for me. I am very excited and blessed to be given the opportunity to play at the professional level right in my hometown. It is definitely a dream come true.

PhoenixMercury.com Can you share something about yourself that Phoenix Mercury fans might be surprised to hear?

Harrison: I have 12 brothers and sisters. My brother, David Harrison, was the last pick of the first round just like me and played for the Indiana Pacers. My father, Dennis Harrison, played in the NFL for 10 years. I enjoy fashion and I stay updated with new trends.

Harden: Something fans may not know about me is that I am the first from my school (Wichita State University) to be drafted into the WNBA. Another thing is that I have looked into trying to have a tiger as a pet. My hobbies are pretty simple. I like to shop and have fun with friends. I am a huge fan of track and field. It’s my second love and I have nothing but respect for that sport and those who compete in it.

Amukamara: I am a huge dancer! I love to dance!
