Mercury Clinch Round 1 Home Game in 2018 WNBA Playoffs

Tickets are on sale now to see the three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury in the 2018 WNBA Playoffs, after the team clinched a Round 1 home game by virtue of tonight’s win against Atlanta and Connecticut’s win over Minnesota.  For the second-straight season, the Mercury will host a single-elimination game to tip-off the postseason at Wells Fargo Arena on the campus of Arizona State University on Tuesday, August 21.

Tickets to the Mercury’s Round 1 playoff game are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 602.252.WNBA or by visiting PhoenixMercury.com.

Phoenix (19-14) cannot finish lower than sixth in the WNBA standings and can still finish as high as fifth.  The Mercury originally sealed its franchise-record sixth-straight playoff berth on August 9 by virtue of Las Vegas’ loss to Minnesota.  It will be the Mercury’s 13th visit to the postseason in franchise history and the 10th in the last 13 years.  It will mark Mercury Head Coach Sandy Brondello’s fifth appearances in the postseason, having led the Mercury to the playoffs in all five years as head coach in Phoenix.

Phoenix’s opponent in the first round remains TBD, but will be against either the Dallas Wing or Minnesota Lynx.  The Mercury finished the regular season with a 2-1 record against Dallas and finished 1-2 against Minnesota.

This season marks the third year of the current WNBA playoff format, as the top-eight teams in the league, regardless of conference, qualify. The first two rounds consist of single-elimination games (5 vs. 8, 6 vs. 7; followed by 3 vs. TBD, 3 vs. TBD), while the semi-finals (1 vs. TBD, 2 vs. TBD) and WNBA Finals are best-of-five series. The top-two teams in the league receive first and second-round byes, while the third and fourth-seeded teams earn a first-round bye and host second-round games.
