The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury earned a spot in another win-or-go-home single-elimination showdown, set for Sunday at NOON Phoenix time (3 p.m. ET) against the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena. Phoenix earned the second-round berth by virtue of an 79-69 win over the Seattle Storm in the opening round of the 2017 WNBA Playoffs at Wells Fargo Arena. Phoenix’s second-round date with the Sun will air on ESPN2.
In Round 2 of the 2017 WNBA Playoffs, the fifth-seeded Mercury and fourth-seeded Sun meet, while either the sixth-seeded Washington Mystics travel to New York to take on the third-seeded Liberty. The winners of these games will advance to play in the best-of-five WNBA Semifinals against either top-seeded Minnesota or second-seeded Los Angeles.
Phoenix, who is now 3-0 in single-elimination games since the league changed its playoff format last season, had three meetings with the Sun this season, twice playing in Connecticut. Despite a 33-point performance by Diana Taurasi on August 4, the Sun came away with a one-point win, 93-92, followed by a 94-66 win 16 days later in Connecticut. The Mercury rebounded with an impressive 86-66 win over the visiting Sun on September 1 at Talking Stick Resort Arena behind 31 points from Brittney Griner. Phoenix and Connecticut have never met in the WNBA Playoffs.
Be Heard in the Playoffs! Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury are headed to their franchise-record fifth-straight WNBA Playoffs, as Taurasi attempts to lead the Mercury to a WNBA-record tying fourth championship.
