Phoenix Mercury Offseason Overseas Update: Week 6

Kesley Bone | Center #3 | Liaoning Hengye (China)

Kelsey Bone turned in yet another solid week of play in China this past week, leading Liaoning to just its second win in the team’s last 10 games. Before picking up that win, Bone scored 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 70-72 loss on December 6 to Heilongjiang. The Mercury center shot 55.6-percent (10-of-18) from the field, and knocked down nine of her 11 free throw attempts. Four days later, Bone finished with a massive game, scoring 37 points and pulling down 16 rebounds in Liaoning’s 75-64 win on December 10. Bone’s impressive play throughout the Chinese League season currently has her ranked fifth in scoring (28.1 ppg) in the league and seventh in rebounding (11.5 rpg). Liaoning will finish up second-stage play on December 13 when the team plays two games that day.

Brittney Griner | Center #42 | UMMC Ekaterinburg (Russia)

Brittney Griner and UMMC Ekaterinburg blasted ESBVA-LM this past week, 88-69, to move to 4-1 in EuroLeague play. Griner finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the win, while shooting 55.6-percent from the field. The Olympic gold medalist has scored in double figures in all five of Ekat’s EuroLeague games this season and is averaging 2.6 blocks in those games. She ranks sixth in the EuroLeague in scoring (16.6 ppg), second in blocks (2.6 bpg) and third in field goal percentage (61.7-percent). Griner did not play in Ekat’s Russian League game on December 11.

Alex Harden | Guard #15 | Hapoel Zichron Maagan Michael (Israel)

Despite the team’s 57-65 loss on December 5 to Ramat Hasharon, Alex Harden finished with an impressive outing in her Israeli League game. The Mercury guard scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, recorded six steals and dished four assists in the loss. Through her team’s three games, Harden is averaging 18.7 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and 2.7 steals per game. She is the only player in the Israeli League to rank in the top 10 in points per game (8th), rebounds per game (9th) and assists per game (8th). Harden also ranks ninth in the league in steals per game.

Isabelle Harrison | Center #20 | CCC Polkowice (Poland)

Isabelle Harrison averaged 13 points and four rebounds in CCC Polkowice’s two games this past week. Harrison came off the bench to score 16 points on seven-of-nine shooting in just 15 minutes of play in Polkowice’s 54-64 loss on December 7 in EuroLeague play. The former Tennessee standout followed up that performance with 10 points and five rebounds in the team’s 88-59 win on December 10. Despite only averaging 16 minutes per game in EuroLeague play (seventh on the team), Harrison ranks third on the team in scoring (10.0 ppg), and leads the team in field goal percentage at 61.1-percent, having knocked down 22 of her 36 shot attempts in Polkwowice’s five EuroLeague contests. In her five Polish League games, Harrison leads the team in scoring (13.2 ppg) despite ranking ninth on the team in minutes per game (16.8).

Sonja Petrovic | Forward #5 | ZVVZ USK Praha (Czech Republic)

Following a week struggling to shoot the ball, Sonja Petrovic exploded for 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists in USK Praha’s 66-69 loss on December 7 in EuroLeague play. It was Praha’s first loss in both the EuroLeague and ZBL League combined. Petrovic shot 58.8-percent (10-of-17) from the field, going nearly perfect from three-point range after knocking down five-of-six from behind the arc. The Mercury forward has scored 20 or more points in three of Praha’s five EuroLeague games this season, ranking her fourth in the league in scoring at 18.6 ppg. Petrovic ranks third in the league in rebounding (10.0 rpg) and leads the EuroLeague in free throw percentage (95-percent), having knocked down 19 of her 20 attempts at the charity stripe.

Diana Taurasi | Guard #32 | UMMC Ekaterinburg (Russia)

After impressive outings in her first three games overseas this season, Diana Taurasi put on yet another show in UMMC Ekaterinburg’s 88-68 win on December 7 in EuroLeague play. Taurasi scored a game-high 34 points and dished four assists in the win. Her 34 points are the second-most points scored by a player in EuroLeague play this season, trailing only Alex Quigley’s 35 points on October 27. Through two EuroLeague games, Taurasi is averaging 26.5 points per contest and has knocked down all 11 of her free throw attempts. In four total overseas games this season (EuroLeague and Russian League combined), Taurasi averages 22.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, while shooting 41.4-percent from the field and 90-percent from the free throw line. The four-time Olympic gold medalist did not play in Ekat’s 75-49, Russian League, win on December 11.

Marta Xargay saw 32 minutes of action in USK Praha’s only game this past week, as the team dropped its first game of the season, 66-69, in EuroLeague play. The Mercury guard scored nine points on two-of-eight shooting, and finished with three rebounds and three assists. Having entered the game averaging 15.5 points per game in EuroLeague action, it was the first EuroLeague game this season in which Xaragy did not score in double figures.
