Phoenix Mercury Offseason Overseas Update: Week 9

Kesley Bone | Center #3 | Liaoning Hengye (China)

Kelsey Bone wrapped up her 34-game season in the Chinese League on January 14, guiding Liaoning Hengye to a 4-0 record over its final four games of the season. Bone averaged 35.8 points and 10.8 rebounds over those four games, scoring 30 or more points in three of the four contests. She ended the season with a 46-point, 10-rebound performance, shooting 69-percent (20-of-29) from the floor and knocking down her one three-point attempt in Liaoning’s final game. The Mercury center finished as the only player in China ranked in the top 10 in points per game, rebounding per game and assists per game, finishing fourth in scoring (27.4 ppg), seventh in rebounding (11.4 rpg) and eighth in assists (3.2 apg).

Candice Dupree | Forward #4 | ZVVZ USK Praha (Czech Republic)

After making her overseas debut on January 4 with USK Praha, Candice Dupree posted back-to-back double-digit scoring performances in Praha’s games on Jan 7th and 11th. Dupree shot six-of-10 from the field and five-of-six from the free throw line, en route to 17 points in Praha’s ZBL League win on the 7th. She followed up that showing with 12 points and three rebounds in the team’s EuroLeague win just four days later. Dupree did not play in either of Praha’s games on January 14th and 18th. The Mercury forward is averaging 11.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in her three games played overseas.

Brittney Griner | Center #42 | UMMC Ekaterinburg (Russia)

After not playing in UMMC Ekaterinburg’s game on January 8, Brittney Griner has averaged 19.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in Ekat’s last three games, all of which have resulted in wins. In those three games, Griner recorded 20+ point performances in back-to-back games for the first time in this year’s overseas season. After scoring 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting in Ekat’s blowout win in the Russian League on January 15, the Olympic gold-medalist finished with 22 points and nine rebounds in Ekat’s 82-56, EuroLeague, win on January 18. Through 14 games (both Russian League and EuroLeague) overseas this year, Griner is averaging 15.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game, while shooting 58.7-percent from the field. In the EuroLeague alone, Griner ranks tenth in scoring (15.9 ppg), ninth in free throw percentage (85.3), third in field goal percentage (58.8) and first in blocks per game (2.3). Following her 26-point performance on the 15th, Griner was named the Russian League Player of the Week.

Alex Harden | Guard #15 | Hapoel Zichron Maagan Michael (Israel)

Alex Harden and Hapoel Zichron Maagan Michael dropped their fifth-straight game in the Israeli League on January 9, falling 65-67. Harden played all 40 minutes in the game, finishing with 19 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. The Mercury guard has scored in double figures in all 10 of her team’s games, including back-to-back 19-point performances in her last two. Through the ten games games, Harden leads her team in points per game (16.8), rebounds per game (8.2), assists per game (4.8), steals per game (3.0) and minutes per game (38:03).

Isabelle Harrison | Center #20 | CCC Polkowice (Poland)

In the last four games, Izzy Harrison and CCC Polkowice has gone 2-2, posting a 2-0 record in Polish League play and a 0-2 record in the EuroLeague. After coming off the bench for Polkowice on January 8, Harrison finished with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting in just 18 minutes of play. The Mercury center also grabbed eight boards in the win. Harrison followed up that performance with a 26-point, 12-rebound outing in Polkowice’s EuroLeague loss on January 11, earning the start for the first time since November 9. The former Lady Vol started in Polkowice’s next two games, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds in the team’s Polish League win on January 14, but struggled in the 59-65 loss on January 18, scoring six points on one-of-seven shooting. Harrison currently leads Polkowice in scoring (13.4 ppg) in Polish League games, while ranking third on the team in scoring (10.5) in EuroLeague games.

Sonja Petrovic | Forward #5 | ZVVZ USK Praha (Czech Republic)

Sonja Petrovic and USK Praha cruised to a 4-0 record in their last four games, winning by an average of 31 points in those contests. Petrovic had big performances in Praha’s two recent EuroLeague games, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds on January 11, and 27 points and 12 rebounds on January 18. Petrovic currently ranks second in the EuroLeague in scoring at 20.1 points per game, trailing only Mercury teammate Diana Taurasi, while also ranking third in the league in rebounds per game (9.8). She is currently on pace to become the only player in the EuroLeague to average at least 13 points and seven rebounds in each of the last four EuroLeague seasons (four players had averaged 13 points and seven rebounds in each of the last three EuroLeague seasons).

Diana Taurasi | Guard #32 | UMMC Ekaterinburg (Russia)

Diana Taurasi has continued to put of big numbers this year while overseas with UMMC Ekaterinburg. In Ekat’s EuroLague win on January 11, Taurasi scored 26 points, knocking down six three-pointers in the game. After seeing minimal time in the team’s Russian League contest on January 15, Taurasi buried three three-pointers en route to 13 points. The four-time Olympic gold medalist also chipped in seven assists. Taurasi currently leads the EuroLeague in scoring per game (21.2), just ahead of Mercury teammate Sonja Petrovic. Despite having played in only six of Ekat’s nine EuroLeague games this season, she also leads the league in made three-pointers with 26, which is four more than second place.

Marta Xargay | Guard #10 | ZVVZ USK Praha (Czech Republic)

Marta Xargay had decent showings in USK Praha’s last four games, having her standout game of the past two weeks on January 11. Xargay scored 11 points and dished seven assists in the win, while adding four rebounds to the box score. In 19 games overseas with Praha this season (both EuroLeague and ZBL League), the Olympic silver medalist with Spain is averaging 10.9 points, 3.4 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game.
