Believe In Women: Lakisa Muhammad

Lakisa Muhammad

Lakisa Muhammad is a fierce activist, story teller, educator, and cultural preservationist. She is the owner and midwife at A Mother’s Worth Birth Services. Lakisa is the executive director of the Phoenix Birth Foundation, a nonprofit committed to improving birth outcomes and experiences for families of color. She is the founder and leader of Arizona Birthworkers of Color, an organization that strives to help Birthworkers of color be seen, heard, and honored for their work.

Lakisa was the organizer of the first Black Breastfeeding Week celebration in the state of Arizona and continues to convene this event yearly. Lakisa was a key contributor in the creation of the pilot program for Birth Behind Bars at Estrella Women’s Jail in Maricopa County. She has the distinct honor of being the first civilian support person to ever attend a birth for a justice involved person in the state. She continues to provide numerous newspaper, radio and documentary interviews about midwifery care, health equity, and birth outcomes in the Black community.

Lakisa provides care in the Phoenix Metro area and its suburbs where she calls home with her husband and 3 children. Her family is a grounding force in her life. Caring for others would not be possible without the support of her favorite 4.
