3 Things We Learned From #MercAtMystics
Tuesday: Phoenix, Wednesday: D.C., Thursday: Connecticut, Friday: D.C.
After a game-winning three-pointer from Leilani Mitchell less than 24 hours ago, the Mercury simply ran out of gas late in the game en route to a 71-63 loss to the Washington Mystics. The Mercury are now 17-12 on the season.
Leilani Mitchell continued her hot-shooting streak with a team-high 16 points (four three-pointers), while Brittney Griner added 12 points, nine rebounds and a hugely impressive slam dunk (more on this below).
Amazingly, the Mystics were the only team the Mercury has yet to play in 2015. After the road loss, Phoenix will get a chance to avenge their loss against Washington at home on Wednesday, September 2 at 12:30 P.M.
Here are the takeaways from #MercAtMystics:
Brittney Griner’s Dunks Again
Mercury center Brittney Griner dunked for the sixth time in her career on Friday night.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, there have been 12 total dunks in WNBA history and only one other player – Candace Parker – has two career dunks.
Here’s video of the remarkable play:
Fatigue Set In
You won’t hear a single Mercury player or coach mention this, but it looked like fatigue played a small part in Phoenix’s loss to the Mystics.
On this unique road trip, the Mercury will travel a total of 4,847 air miles in seven days. They began in Phoenix on Tuesday, traveled to Washington D.C. for the White House celebration on Wednesday, Connecticut on Thursday and back to D.C. to play the Mystics on Friday.
They’ll culminate this three-game trip in Minnesota on Sunday at 4 P.M.
Uncharacteristic Turnovers
Coming into Friday’s game against the Mystics, the Mercury averaged 12.46 turnovers per game which is the second-fewest in the WNBA, just one one-hundreth of a point behind Chicago (12.29). Phoenix and Chicago are chasing the WNBA record for fewest turnovers per game in a season as the 2013 Minnesota Lynx averaged 12.12 turnovers per game.
However, Phoenix would turn the ball over 19 times in Washington — something that is virtually unheard of from the Mercury this season.
Luckily for the Mercury, they’ll have a day off before they face the West-leading Lynx in Minnesota on Sunday at 4 P.M. Arizona time.
