3 Things We Learned From #MercAtShock
After a thrilling 19-point comeback against the Chicago Sky at home less than 48 hours ago, the Mercury faced a tough Tulsa Shock team on the road Thursday night.
It wasn’t easy, but the Mercury would (again) comeback from being down by double-digits to beat the Shock, 78-66. Phoenix is now 11-7 on the year and 2.5 games behind Minnesota for first place in the Western Conference.
Over the last 10 games, the Mercury has improved its field goal percentage by nearly six-percent to 44-percent. On June 30–the first of those 10 games–the team entered the game ranked last in field goal percentage in the WNBA. (Source: Mercury Communications)
Here are three things we learned from #MercAtShock:
A Third Quarter Team
Maybe it’s the adjustments that Sandy Brondello makes at halftime.
Maybe it’s the aggressiveness the team collectively displays during the latter part of their games.
Or maybe it’s all just a weird coincidence.
Whatever the reason(s) is (are), the Mercury seem to love the third quarter.
They used it in a major way to comeback against the Sky on Tuesday, holding Chicago to zero points halfway through the third quarter.
Against the Shock, Phoenix outscored Tulsa 24-13 in the third to comeback from being down by 12 points. They would replicate their performance in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Shock 23-13.
DeWanna Bonner is Ridiculous (in a good way)
After an insane performance on Tuesday with 34 huge points, Bonner once again proved why she is a superstar in this league.
DB finished with 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in 38 minutes.
Perhaps more significant, Bonner currently has made 38 consecutive free throws dating back to July 10, the second-longest active streak in the WNBA.
Her 38 consecutive made free throws ties Penny Taylor (7/6 – 8/17/2010) for the longest streak in team history.
The Mercury’s Frontcourt Dominated
In addition to Bonner’s impressive play, both Brittney Griner and Candice Dupree had dominant nights.
Griner finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. Dupree tallied 20 points and four rebounds on 9-of-13 shooting.
Phoenix is now 19-3 overall vs. the Shock since the 2010 season when they moved to Tulsa.
