3 Things We Learned From #MercAtSparks
Los Angeles did its best to snap Phoenix’s recent dominance over them, but the Mercury ultimately held on in a dramatic, 94-91 overtime victory.
The win gives the Mercury a 3-1 record since the return of Brittney Griner, who put up 19 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and four assists in another dominant effort for the former No. 1 overall pick. DeWanna Bonner (22 points), and Candice Dupree (21 points, six rebounds, six assists) led Phoenix in scoring as they secured their eighth consecutive victory over Los Angeles, including last season’s 2-0 postseason sweep.
Here’s what we learned from #MercAtSparks:
Easy As B-C-D: Stars Came Through in Big Win
Brittney, Candice and DeWanna combined for 62 of the team’s 94 points, and that’s not including 11 total assists between that led directly to other baskets as well.
Dupree was especially lethal in the second quarter. The four-time All-Star scored 11 consecutive Mercury points, keeping her team afloat through an otherwise rough second quarter of offense.
Once Again, (Lack of) Turnovers Mattered
Neither side was especially charitable with the ball in what turned out to be a cleanly played thriller. The Mercury, however, were even more judicious in their offensive approach, turning the ball over just four times despite adding an extra overtime’s worth of opportunities for error.
Leilani Mitchell’s late overtime miscue put Phoenix in a late two-point deficit, but she was able to make up for it because…
Mitchell, Griner and the Mercury Were Clutch
Griner punctuated Phoenix’s final defensive stand of the night with a block at point-blank range and a rebound, denying the Sparks’ last-minute bid to go ahead for good.
Coaching and execution took over from there, as the Mercury used as much time as they could before Dupree found Mitchell open behind the three-point line. The six-year pro turned in an early highlight in her first season with Phoenix, nailing the eventual game-winning triple with 3.9 seconds remaining.
