3 Things We Learned From #MercVsLiberty
In a 75-73 loss to the New York Liberty Saturday night, the Mercury’s win streak of six games has been snapped. Phoenix is now 9-6 on the season.
Amazingly, Phoenix has gone 16-2 (.889) in the month of July over the last two seasons. This year, Phoenix is 5-1 in July. In 2014, the Mercury went 11-1 (.917).
“We have to learn from it,” Sandy Brondello said. “I can learn from it too, I should have taken a middle pick-and-roll instead of the play I ran near the end—I should have taken a quick one but I chose not to. But we just have to learn from it (the loss) and that’s all we can do. Learn from it and move forward. Rebounding has been an issue for us all season long and that’s more of a mentality, that’s just working hard and focusing on that.
“We’ll focus a little bit more in practice and hopefully more muscle memory.”
Here are three things we learned from #MercVsLiberty:
Uncharacteristic Play
Overall, it was an uncharacteristic night for the Mercury. Phoenix shot just 43 percent from the floor, 33 percent from the three-point line and allowed 17 offensive rebounds.
Furthermore, there were multiple turnovers in the final few minutes, fouls they usually don’t commit and they were collectively out-rebounded by 16 as a team.
“We have to execute down the stretch—we had two or three turnovers towards the end that kind of gave them momentum—I think that’s what caused the game,” DeWanna Bonner said. “We tied it up, but she got fouled at the end of the game but definitely the turnovers towards the end.
“We didn’t execute very well.”
Dupree Reaches 4,500 Points
With eight points on the night, Candice Dupree surpassed the 4,500-point mark.
CanDu is the 19th player in WNBA history to reach that plateau.
“I’d much rather have the win,” Dupree said. “In terms of the game, we had too many turnovers down the stretch, with two and a half minutes to go we should’ve been able to close it out, I think we were up five and we had two or three turnovers and it killed us. I feel like as a group we were too passive tonight.
“We weren’t really aggressive like we normally are—attacking, trying to get out and run a transition—it hurt us.”
Brittney Griner’s Impressive Night
Brittney Griner continued her dominant play on both ends of the floor.
BG finished with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, eight rebounds and an astounding seven blocked shots.
Griner is currently leading the league in field goal percentage at 61.2-percent (52-of-85) this season. The single-season franchise record for field goal percentage in a season is 66.4-percent set by Candice Dupree in 2010.
Additionally, Griner tied her season-high for blocks with seven on Saturday night. In a battle between the top two players in blocks per game, Griner leads the league with 3.86 blocks per game and New York’s Kiah Stokes is second with 2.64 blocks per game.
