5 Amazing Stats: The Mercury’s Impressive Start
With a turbulent offseason, starting their 2015 campaign with a 3-3 record through the first six games (and being very close to 4-2 had they not lost to the Sun in double overtime) is an inspiring accomplishment for the Phoenix Mercury, to say the least.
“Look, we’re still a work in progress,” Sandy Brondello said recently. “We’re still working every day to get better. It’s still early in the season, but I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made up to this point. Everyone is working hard to improve, and we’ll continue to do that as a team.”

Dynamic Duo
DeWanna Bonner is second in the WNBA in scoring averaging 20.2 points through six games.
With her 23 points against the Storm, Bonner currently sits fourth on the all-time Mercury scoring list with 2,755 career points. She is just 38 points shy of Jennifer Gillom for third-place on the Mercury’s all-time scoring list.
Additionally, the ever-consistent Candice Dupree ranks sixth in the WNBA in scoring averaging 16.0 points per game.
Dupree and Bonner rank eighth and tenth in total field goals made with 39 and 38 respectively.
The Impressive Rookies
Forward/center Cayla Francis ranks sixth in the league among fellow rookies in scoring with 7.3 points per game and second among rookies in rebounds with 6.0 rebounds per game.
Not to be forgotten, guard Alex Harden has already won Mercury fans over with her tenacious play and suffocating defense.
Leilani from Downtown
Leilani Mitchell is shooting 50.0-percent from the three-point line this season (14-of-28), tied for fourth in the league.
Through six games, Mitchell is averaging career highs in points (10.2), three-point field goals made (2.3), three-point field goals attempted (4.7) and three-point field goal percentage (.500).
Against the West
The Mercury are 3-0 vs. Western Conference opponents and remain the only undefeated team vs. their own conference in the WNBA.
Phoenix faces Western Conference opponents in each of their next seven games. The Mercury’s next Eastern Conference opponent is the Dream at home on July 14.
Turnover Differential
The Mercury average 13.0 turnovers per game which is tied for the second-fewest in the league.
Perhaps more significant, Phoenix is forcing an average of 16.2 turnovers per game. That +3.2 differential is also the second-best in the league.
