Serbia made for a familiar opponent for Team USA and specifically for Phoenix Mercury players Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi. The duo knows many of its players from Euroleague seasons, including WNBA teammate Sonja Petrovic.

Taurasi used that familiarity to her advantage en route to the best Olympic performance of her career.

Phoenix’s superstar was unstoppable from the opening tip, scoring 16 of her 25 points in the first quarter to lead the United States to a 110-84 victory in preliminary play. Griner added seven points, two rebounds and a block in just 11 minutes of playing time as the red-white-and-blue remained undefeated through four games.

Serbia actually led 17-16 before Taurasi erupted for one of her trademark scoring sprees, hitting a trio of three-pointers in less than a minute-and-a-half of playing time. That stretch accounted for half of her six three-pointers, breaking her own single-game Olympic record of five that she tied earlier this week. Taurasi added six assists and three rebounds before her day was done, all in just under 24 minutes of play.

As usual, the former WNBA MVP downplayed her individual performance while recognizing the work of her teammates.

“When you do get going and you got everyone kind of helping you, it makes things a little bit easier,” Taurasi said.

Team USA head coach Geno Auriemma was not surprised that his Olympic star deflected her well-deserved attention.

“She always does,” he said. “I think that’s one of her biggest strengths. You know, when you’re really, really good, you don’t have to say anything, other people say it for you. Those guys are running around telling you how good they are. That’s not Dee. It’s like those people who tell you, ‘I work really hard for a living.’ Really? If you worked really hard for a living, other people would say that about you. You don’t have to say that about it yourself. And Dee is the same way.”

The United States will face North America neighbor Canada on Friday before wrapping up group play against China on Sunday. Team USA women’s basketball has now won 44 straight games and is aiming to win its sixth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
