The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury will recognize its star center Brittney Griner with two exciting initiatives this weekend. The WNBA All-Star has once again teamed up with Phoenix Rescue Mission to host the fourth annual “BG’s Heart & Sole Shoe Drive” before the Mercury’s matchup against the Dallas Wings on Saturday, August 10 at Talking Stick Resort Arena at 7 p.m. The event, designed to benefit the homeless throughout the Valley, will begin at 5 p.m. in the Casino Arizona Pavilion.
Fans are encouraged to donate new or gently used shoes of all sizes at Talking Stick Resort Arena, and all fans who contribute to the cause will be entered to win autographed Brittney Griner merchandise and the chance to meet BG. All shoes collected through the initiative will be donated to Phoenix Rescue Mission, and Griner will join the organization to personally deliver shoes to those in need later in the month.
“The impact that we have been able to make in our community with the Heart & Sole Shoe Drive has been a humbling experience for me,” said Griner. “Owning a pair of shoes to put on each day is something that I think a lot of people take for granted, and I’m excited to expand the program in collaboration with the Mercury and Phoenix Rescue Mission to continue helping those in need throughout the Valley.”
BG’s Heart and Sole Drive is one of the many ways the Mercury center has made a positive impact in the community since her arrival to the Valley in 2013. Griner has been recognized with the WNBA Community Assist Award on several occasions and is an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ community. In 2018 she donated $5,000 to local nonprofit one•n•ten after an arsonist burned down its youth center. In recognition of her commitment to the LGBTQ community, the first 2,500 fans in attendance to Sunday’s game will receive an exclusive Brittney Griner bobblehead that features Griner with the LGBTQ pride rainbow flag. Photos of the bobblehead are below and attached.
Since its inception in August 2016, Griner, the Mercury and Phoenix Rescue Mission have collected and distributed more than 1,000 pairs of shoes to those in need through “BG’s Heart & Sole Shoe Drive.” Video of Griner personally distributing shoes from a previous event can be downloaded here:
As part of “BG’s Heart & Sole Shoe Drive,” fans also have the option to donate shoes by mail in conjunction with the pregame collection event on Friday. Fans interesting in contributing can send their new or gently used shoes to the address below:
