The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today signed Arizona State standout, forward Sophie Brunner, to a training camp contract. Training camp begins with player physicals at the IASIS Healthcare Multi-Specialty Clinic on Sunday, April 23, while practices will begin the following day on April 24.
A 6-foot-1 forward, Brunner averaged 11.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game over her four-year career at Arizona State. She helped guide the Sun Devils to four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and finished third on the program’s all-time scoring list (1,405 points) and second on the all-time rebounding chart (921 rebounds). Brunner was named to the All-Pac-12 Team in each of her final three years at ASU, and became the first Sun Devil since Briann January in 2009 to be receive All-American accolades following her junior season, earning honorable mention on the 2016 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team.
Some of Brunner’s most memorable performances during the 2016-17 season came against top team’s around the country, most notably against eventual national champion, South Carolina. Brunner finished with team highs in points (20) and rebounds (nine) in the 68-71, second round, loss in the NCAA Tournament. It was the smallest margin of victory South Carolina had in the entire postseason. Additionally, Brunner averaged 15.0 points and 9.1 rebounds in seven games against four of the Pac-12’s best teams (UCLA, Oregon State, Washington, and Stanford).
