Mercury Sign Free Agent Forward Monique Currie
PHOENIX – The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today signed free agent forward Monique Currie, the team has announced. Currie, who has spent eight of her nine seasons in the WNBA with the Washington Mystics, owns career averages of 10.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
“Monique is a proven scorer who is versatile and athletic,” said Mercury General Manager Jim Pitman. “She can handle the ball, create, slash and rebound. Her strength and length also will help us defensively, and we are excited to add her. She has been known throughout her career for athleticism and rebounding, but she can also open up the court for us offensively as she is an excellent passer. Having this veteran presence on our team immediately makes us better.”
Currie, 31, has averaged 10.8 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 40.0-percent (353-of-883) over the last three seasons while playing in all 34 games each year. In seven of her nine seasons in the league, the durable forward has played in all 34 games. In 2010, she averaged a career-best 14.1 points and was named to a WNBA All-Star.
Currently, the 6-foot forward is playing with Bichumi in the WKBL in South Korea where she is averaging 15.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Her previous overseas experience includes stints in Spain, Belgium and Turkey.
Originally selected by the Charlotte Sting with the third overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft out of Duke University, Currie was selected with the first overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Dispersal Draft by the Chicago Sky. She was traded from the Sky to the Mystics during the 2007 season.
