Mercury Sign Guard Marta Xargay
PHOENIX – The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today signed free agent guard Marta Xargay (ZAR-gay), the team has announced. Xargay has spent the previous six seasons as a member of Perfumerias Avenida Baloncesto in the Spanish Liga Femenina.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to bring a young player with Marta’s potential to the WNBA,” said Phoenix Mercury General Manager Jim Pitman. “She has a chance to have an impact on our point guard position, now and well into the future. She brings solid international experience, the ability to get to the basket, and a willingness to make the players around her better.”
This season with Perfumerias Avenida, the 5-foot-11 guard is averaging 5.1 points and 2.6 assists per game. In 12 Euroleague games, she is averaging 9.2 points and 3.2 assists per game. With Perfumerias Avenida, she is a teammate of current Phoenix Mercury guard Shay Murphy.
Xargay, 24, is also a member of the Spanish women’s national team that won the Silver Medal at the 2014 FIBA World Championships for Women in Turkey.
