Mercury Sign Shameka Christon

PHOENIX – The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury signed free agent guard Shameka Christon, the team has announced today. Christon enters her 11th WNBA season and has career averages of 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 34.3-percent from beyond the three-point line. She has played with the New York Liberty (2004-2009), Chicago Sky (2010) and San Antonio Stars (2012-2014).

“Shameka is proven three-point shooter who gives us added versatility and depth on the wings,” said Phoenix Mercury General Manager Jim Pitman. “Her veteran presence will be felt on our team this season.”

Christon, 33, was named to the 2009 WNBA All-Star team after averaging a career-high 16.1 points that season with the Liberty. Over the past three seasons with San Antonio, Christon has appeared in 98 of a possible 102 games and has played in all 34 games of the season three times in her career. Christon also has made six playoff appearances where she has averaged 9.6 points and 3.5 rebounds in 19 career games.

The fifth overall selection in the 2004 WNBA Draft by New York, Christon was named SEC Player of the Year as a senior at the University of Arkansas. She finished her college career ranked second on Arkansas’ all-time scoring list with 1,951 points.

Sandy Brondello, 2014 WNBA Coach of the Year, leads 2014 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Brittney Griner, All-Star Candice Dupree and three-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year DeWanna Bonner as the Mercury open defense of their title on Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. against the San Antonio Stars at US Airways Center.
