Pior to Game 2, Mercury guard Tiffany Bias posted a photo to her Instagram account that had the following caption…

“We’re all we got. We’re all we need.”

That phrase has become something endearing that the team has adopted this season, and has carried on as a mantra throughout the Playoffs so far.

It looks like they’ll be looking to the meaning of that saying even more; in a 91-67 rout of the Tulsa Shock Saturday night, the Mercury advanced to the 2015 WNBA Western Conference Finals for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

The Mercury will face either the Los Angeles Sparks or the Minnesota Lynx in the Western Conference Finals.

Phoenix is 6-4 all-time in the Playoffs against Los Angeles (including winners of six of the last eight games and three consecutive series wins) and 2-5 all-time in the Playoffs against Minnesota (winning the 2014 Western Conference Finals 2-1). Should Minnesota win the series, Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals will be at Target Center in Minneapolis on Thursday, September 24, and the Mercury’s home game would be Game 2 on Sunday, September 27, at US Airways Center. All times are still to be determined.

Should Los Angeles advance, however, Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals will be on Thursday, September 24 in Phoenix at US Airways Center at a time to be announced.

The Mercury has now led a Playoff series 1-0 a remarkable 12 times in team history and has gone on to win that series 11 of 12 times — including 10 straight series.

“We’re peaking at the right time,” Sandy Brondello said after the game. “I think we continue to improve on the defensive end of the floor which is where our identity is. Make no mistake about it; we still have a lot of work to do. Minnesota and L.A. are two really good teams.”

Saturday’s win over the Shock marked the  second consecutive first round series sweep for Phoenix and the fourth first round sweep in team history (2007, 2010, 2014). Perhaps more noteworthy, the series win over the Shock means that Brittney Griner has advanced to the Conference Finals in all three of her seasons in the WNBA — something that no other draftee from the class of 2013 can say.

Speaking of Griner, BG finished with her second consecutive double-double of the postseason (third overall) with 23 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

“My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball in the post, and I just tried to be aggressive,” Griner said. “I think we are starting to come together at the perfect time, but we have a lot to prepare for in the next round.”

DeWanna Bonner added 20 points and 11 rebounds for her third career Playoff double-double.

“Tulsa is a good team,” Bonner said. “This wasn’t easy. They play tough and we had to step our game up in order to get this win. And whether it’s Minnesota or Los Angeles in the next round, we’re going to work as hard as we possibly can to get ready.”
