Mercury to Honor Notre Dame Coach Muffet Mcgraw Friday

The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury will honor University of Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach Muffet McGraw during the Mercury’s game against the Minnesota Lynx tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Talking Stick Resort Arena.  As part of the Mercury’s Believe In Women platform, the team has honored women in sports, business and philanthropy making a difference in Arizona and the world at large.  McGraw will be the 11th recipient of the honor this summer.

McGraw made national headlines during a press conference at the 2019 NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four in April when saying, “I’m getting tired of the novelty of the first female governor of this state, the first female African American mayor of this city.  When is it going to become the norm instead of the exception? How are these young women looking up and seeing someone that looks like them, preparing them for the future? We don’t have enough female role models.  We don’t have enough visible women leaders. We don’t have enough women in power.”

Entering her 33rd season as the head coach for Notre Dame, McGraw has tallied over 800 wins during her time with the Fighting Irish, has led the program to two national championships (2001, 2018), seven trips to the national championship game, and nine appearances in the Final Four.  In September of 2017, McGraw was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, becoming the 32nd women ever inducted and the 13th female head coach.  All five players from Notre Dame selected during the 2019 WNBA Draft made a final roster, including the Phoenix Mercury’s own Brianna Turner (11th overall pick).

After coming within one win of trip to the WNBA Finals, the Phoenix Mercury return in 2019 in search of a league-record tying fourth WNBA title.  Led by the All-Star trio of Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and DeWanna Bonner, Phoenix looks to continue its title quest on September 6 against Minnesota.  Tickets for the Mercury’s final two home game on Friday, September 6 against the Minnesota Lynx and Sunday, September 8 against the Las Vegas Aces at Talking Stick Resort Arena can be purchased by calling 602.252.WNBA or by visiting PhoenixMercury.com.
