Mercury to Host Dallas Wings in Round 1 of WNBA Playoffs

The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today clinched the five seed in the WNBA Playoffs with a 96-85 win over New York, and will host the Dallas Wings at 5:30 p.m. Phoenix time this Tuesday, August 21.  Due to a scheduling conflict, the game will take place at Wells Fargo Arena on the campus of Arizona State University.

Tickets to the Mercury’s Round 1 playoff game are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 602.252.WNBA or by visiting PhoenixMercury.com.

Phoenix (20-14) originally clinched a Round 1 home game by virtue of the team’s win against Atlanta and Connecticut’s win over Minnesota on Friday night, and has sealed its franchise-record sixth-straight playoff berth on August 9.  It will be the Mercury’s 13th visit to the postseason in franchise history and the 10th in the last 13 years.  It will mark Mercury Head Coach Sandy Brondello’s fifth appearances in the postseason, having led the Mercury to the playoffs in all five years as head coach in Phoenix.

This season marks the third year of the current WNBA playoff format, as the top-eight teams in the league, regardless of conference, qualify. The first two rounds consist of single-elimination games (Phoenix vs. Dallas, Los Angeles vs. Minnesota; followed by Connecticut vs. TBD, Atlanta or Washington vs. TBD), while the semi-finals (Seattle vs. TBD, Atlanta or Washington vs. TBD) and WNBA Finals are best-of-five series. The top-two teams in the league receive first and second-round byes, while the third and fourth-seeded teams earn a first-round bye and host second-round games.
