PHOENIX MERCURY ACQUIRES REBECCA ALLEN IN SIGN-AND-TRADE WITH CONNECTICUT SUN FOR GUARD MORIAH JEFFERSON

Welcome to the Valley Rebecca Allen

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury today announced the team has acquired forward Rebecca Allen in a sign-and-trade deal with the Connecticut Sun. In exchange, Phoenix will send guard Moriah Jefferson to Connecticut.

“Becca is a multidimensional player, who can impact the game on both ends of the floor with her elite shooting, versatility and length,” said Mercury general manager Nick U’Ren. “The veteran leadership and high basketball IQ that she brings will be invaluable to our team.”

An eight-year WNBA veteran, Allen played last season with the Connecticut Sun after playing the first seven years of her career (2015-19, 21-22) with the New York Liberty. The Australia native averaged 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in 2023, playing in all 40 games (27 starts) for Connecticut. During the season, Allen became the 10th fastest player in WNBA history to record at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 150 blocks and 180 three-point field goals made (195 games). In Connecticut’s win against New York in Game 1 of the 2023 WNBA Semifinals, Allen posted a playoff career-high 18 points on 77.8% shooting (4-of-6 from three) while adding seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Prior to the WNBA, Allen began her professional career in Australia’s WNBL (Women’s National Basketball League) at the age of 16. Allen has been a member of the Australian National Team since 2014, competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and most recently winning bronze at the 2022 FIBA World Cup.

Jefferson, a seven-year WNBA veteran, appeared in 39 games (36 starts) for the Mercury last season, averaging 10.5 points, 3.6 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game. Jefferson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, signed as a free agent with the Mercury in 2023 and has previously spent time with the Minnesota Lynx, Dallas Wings and Las Vegas Aces/San Antonio Silver Stars.

The Phoenix Mercury will open the 2024 WNBA season on the road against the Las Vegas Aces on May 14, followed by the Fry’s Food Stores Home Opener vs. the Atlanta Dream on May 18. Tickets for the home opener are available at phoenixmercury.com/single-game-tickets.
