The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today announced the signing of forward Asia Taylor. The addition of Taylor brings the count of healthy players for the Mercury to nine.
Due to the Mercury having fewer than 10 players available because of injury, Phoenix was granted a second emergency hardship exception by the league, allowing the team to sign a player to a seven-day contract. Taylor is the second player the Mercury has signed this week (Arica Carter) following an emergency hardship exception.
Taylor is in her fifth WNBA season, having seen stints with Minnesota, Connecticut and Indiana. The 6-1 forward holds averages of 2.3 points and 1.6 rebounds in 72 career games, and is currently averaging a career-best 3.1 points and 1.8 rebounds this season after playing in eight games with Minnesota earlier this year. Taylor had one of her best performances of her career on July 10 of this season against Chicago, netting a career-high 13 points in 17 minutes, to go along with two rebounds and two assists. Originally the 36th overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the Lynx, Taylor was a four-year player at Louisville.
After coming within one win of trip to the WNBA Finals, the Phoenix Mercury return in 2019 in search of a league-record tying fourth WNBA title. Led by the All-Star trio of Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and DeWanna Bonner, Phoenix looks to continue its title quest on August 8 against Los Angeles. Tickets for the Mercury’s next home game on Saturday, August 10 against the Dallas Wings, and the remaining seven home games, at Talking Stick Resort Arena can be purchased by calling 602.252.WNBA or by visiting PhoenixMercury.com.
