Taurasi, Griner Lead The Comeback, Mercury Advance to WNBA Semifinals

The Phoenix Mercury were down by 17 early in the game, but following a strong third quarter, made a thrilling comeback in the single-elimination playoff game against the Conneticut Sun.

Brittney Griner sunk a basket with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Mercury their first lead since the score was 3-0.

The battle continued in the fourth quarter as neither team could pull away. This was until Leilani Mitchell drained a three to put the Mercury up by two.

This was followed up by consecutive threes from Diana Taurasi and Monique Currie. With under three minutes to go, the Mercury had their largest lead of the game up 84-79.

Coming into the game, Taurasi was 10-0 in Winner-Take-All Games and the GOAT’s 23 points helped lead the Mercury to an 88-83 victory. Griner put up 26 points while grabbing nine rebounds in the win.

The Mercury advance to the WNBA Semifinals to take on either Minnesota or Los Angeles.
