About Jennifer Gillom
Jennifer Gillom, the creator of the infamous “Mighty Mercury” chant, became the first Mercury player in franchise history after being awarded to Phoenix in the league’s 1997 initial allocation. During her six years (1997-2002) in a Mercury jersey, Gillom helped lead the franchise to playoff appearances in three of its first four seasons, including a berth in the 1998 WNBA Finals.
Gillom averaged 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in 183 regular season games with Phoenix and led the Mercury in scoring in five of her six seasons. During the 1998 season, she became the second WNBA player to reach 1,000 career points and was named the WNBA MVP Runner-Up. Gillom currently ranks sixth all-time on the franchise’s scoring list, fourth in steals and seventh in rebounds.
The Abbeville, Mississippi, native was a two-time All-WNBA Team selection (1998 First Team, 1997 Second Team), a 1999 WNBA All-Star and the league’s 2002 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award winner. Following her playing career, Gillom returned to the Mercury as a player development coach for the 2019 season.
A member of the 1988 USA Olympic gold medal team, Gillom has been inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (2009), the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame (2022) and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame (2008).
On June 6, 2006, Gillom joined Cheryl Miller, Bridget Pettis and Michele Timms as the first inductees into the Mercury’s Ring of Honor.
