PHOENIX – The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today re-signed reserve forward Mistie Bass, the team has announced. Bass, a 2014 WNBA Champion with the Mercury, has spent the last two seasons of her nine-year WNBA career with Phoenix.
“Players who do the little things on the floor can sometimes have big impacts, and Mistie Bass is one of those players,” said Mercury General Manager Jim Pitman. “Her ability and willingness to set screens, defend and rebound add an element of toughness that absolutely will be necessary in our quest for a fourth WNBA title. We are excited to have her back.”
One of the first players off the bench for Sandy Brondello in each of the last two seasons, Bass is best known for her toughness and durability on the court. She owns career averages of 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds in 252 career games, and is a career 51.7-percenet shooter from the field. She has played in 166 of a possible 170 games over the last five seasons, including 67 of a possible 68 in her time in Phoenix. Bass has averaged 4.2 points and 3.1 rebounds, and shot 51.1-percent from the field in her time with the Mercury. Last season, Bass scored a career-high 20 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds in the season finale on September 13 at Tulsa, the seventh double-double of her career.
Bass has appeared in 19 career playoff games, including all 12 Mercury playoff games during her two-year career with Phoenix. In a moment the X-Factor will never forget, during the deciding game of the 2014 Western Conference Finals, Bass set a jarring screen in the closing seconds of the third quarter that freed Diana Taurasi for a halfcourt shot—a shot that went in and ignited a Mercury run that secured the team’s berth in the WNBA Finals.
A 2006 graduate of Duke University, Bass has played for Houston (2006 – 2008), Chicago (2009 – 2010), Connecticut (2012 – 2013) and Phoenix as a professional.
