Dupree and Griner Named Starters for WNBA Western Conference All-Star Team
PHOENIX – Two members of the WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury will start Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2015 on Saturday, July 25, as forward Candice Dupree and center Brittney Griner tonight were voted Western Conference starters, the league has announced. For Dupree, it is her fifth All-Star selection and first as a starter, while Griner has been selected as a starter all three of her seasons in the WNBA. This is the second consecutive year the Mercury have had two starters in the WNBA All-Star Game as Griner and Diana Taurasi were selected starters last season.
Despite a host of roster changes, Dupree has been a mainstay for the Mercury, starting all 13 games, averaging 14.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game this season. She has scored in double-figures in 11 of 13 games and, on June 5 vs. San Antonio, moved into 19th place on the WNBA All-Time scoring list. In four career All-Star Games (2006, 2007, 2009, 2014), Dupree is averaging 11.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. At Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2014 in Phoenix, she scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
In just her third WNBA season, Griner is averaging a team-high 17.8 points and 8.0 rebounds this season. She is leading the WNBA this season in blocks per game (3.83) and field goal percentage (61.2-percent). On July 2 vs. Tulsa, the 2014 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year blocked seven shots—the most by any player in the league this season. She also has two double-doubles in six games this year. The 6-foot-8 center scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds in the 2014 WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix. She was selected a starter for the 2013 WNBA All-Star Game, but did not play due to injury.
As a result of winning the WNBA’s Western Conference last season, Mercury head coach Sandy Brondello will serve as head coach of the Western Conference All-Star team. Brondello was a member of the WNBA Eastern Conference All-Star team in 1999 and will become the first former WNBA All-Star to serve as head coach for an All-Star team in WNBA history. She will be joined by her assistants, Julie Hairgrove and Todd Troxel, and, head athletic trainer, Tamara Poole.
Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2015, featuring the Eastern Conference All-Stars against the Western Conference All-Stars at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., will be nationally televised by ABC on Saturday, July 25, at 12:30 p.m. Phoenix time.
