DeWanna Bonner Named WNBA All-Star for First Time in Seven-Year Career
PHOENIX – Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner tonight was named a reserve for the Western Conference WNBA All-Star team, the league announced. This marks Bonner’s first career selection to a WNBA All-Star team. For the third time in team history and the second consecutive year, the Mercury will have three All-Stars, as Bonner joins forward Candice Dupree and center Brittney Griner, who were voted starters last week. Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2015 will take place on Saturday, July 25 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn at 12:30 p.m. Phoenix time.
Bonner is in the midst of one of the best all-around seasons of any player in the WNBA. She is one of two players who rank in the top 15 in the league in points per game (T5th, 17.1), rebounds per game (T13, 6.3) and assists per game (T7th, 3.6), joining Minnesota’s Maya Moore, last season’s league MVP. Bonner’s 3.6 assists are a career-high and she has scored in double-figures in every game this season, including six games of 20-plus points. On June 15, she picked up WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week honors after averaging 19.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals in the first four games of the season.
In her seventh season in the WNBA—all with the Phoenix Mercury—Bonner is third on the all-time franchise scoring list with 2,890 career points behind Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor. She has been a member of two WNBA championship teams with the Mercury (2009 and 2014) and was voted WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year three consecutive years (2009, 2010, 2011).
The Mercury are one of only two teams in the WNBA (Minnesota) this year with three representatives in Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2015. Phoenix had three representatives in the 2014 WNBA All-Star Game (Dupree, Griner and Taurasi) and also had three All-Stars in 2007 (Cappie Pondexter, Taurasi and Taylor).
As a result of winning the WNBA’s Western Conference last season, Mercury head coach Sandy Brondello will serve as head coach of the Western Conference All-Star team. Brondello was a member of the WNBA Eastern Conference All-Star team in 1999 and will become the first former WNBA All-Star to serve as head coach for an All-Star team in WNBA history. She will be joined by her assistants, Julie Hairgrove and Todd Troxel, and, head athletic trainer, Tamara Poole.
Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2015, featuring the Eastern Conference All-Stars against the Western Conference All-Stars at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., will be nationally televised by ABC on Saturday, July 25, at 12:30 p.m. Phoenix time.
