After a tough, double-overtime loss at home on Friday, the Mercury kicked off a three-game roadtrip in Seattle Sunday. Phoenix will also play at San Antonio (Thursday) and at Minnesota (Saturday) before returning home on June 30 to again face San Antonio. The current trip is one of two three-game roadtrips this season for Phoenix.

The task ahead for Phoenix was daunting; playing at Key Arena is never easy. Additionally, the Mercury had not won yet on the road in 2015.

But thanks to a game-high 23 points from DeWanna Bonner, that changed in an impressive 84-72 victory for Phoenix.

Here are three things we learned from #MercAtStorm:

Free Throws, Steals and Defense

When the Mercury’s shots weren’t falling from outside, they made the correct decision to drive to the basket.

It resulted in 28 foul shots (they made 23). Seattle, conversely, went 15-of-19 from the line.

But, unsurprisingly, defense is what won this game.

The Mercury currently rank second in the WNBA in steals, averaging 9.60 per game as a team. Against the Storm on Sunday, Phoenix finished with 11.

Additionally, the Mercury held Seattle scoreless over the final two minutes of regulation which included forcing the Storm into two shot clock violations.

Cayla Francis is Getting More and More Comfortable

With each passing game, Cayla Francis dramatically improves — and along with it, her confidence.

Indeed, against the Storm on Sunday, she looked as comfortable on the floor as she’s been all year.

Francis finished with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in just 19 minutes.

The Big Two

As DeWanna Bonner and Candice Dupree go, so goes the Mercury.

Bonner (23) and Dupree (15) combined to score 38 points for Phoenix, and each grabbed eight rebounds.

Leading the Mercury to 3-3 on the season so far, these two absolutely deserve to be WNBA All-Stars.
