3 Things We Learned From #MercAtStars
After a 20-point win against the Mystics at home Wednesday, the Mercury followed up with another impressive victory, this time over the Stars in San Antonio, 82-52.
Phoenix stormed into halftime up big, 42-29, led by Brittney Griner’s 16 first half points. The Mercury continued to roll in the second half outscoring the Stars 40-23 in the third and fourth quarters.
Brittney Griner had a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Candice Dupree added 12 points and eight rebounds while Monique Currie chipped in 11.
Phoenix has now won nine of the last 11 games against the Stars. The Mercury is 19-13 on the season with two games remaining in the regular season.
Here’s what we learned:
Welcome to the Club, Coach
Mercury head coach Sandy Brondello coached in her 100th career WNBA game Saturday night where her WNBA head coaching career began in 2010.
With the Mercury’s win, Brondello’s winning percentage ranks 4th on the WNBA’s all-time winningest coaches (minimum 100 games). Additionally, Brondello became the 21st coach in WNBA history with 100 career games coached.
Brondello went 14-20 (.412) in 2010 with San Antonio and has a career record of 48-18 (.723) in 2014 and 2015 with Phoenix.
Ball Movement Continues to Improve
Phoenix has been more fluid on offense over the past couple of games, and effective ball movement is a major reason why.
Against the Stars, the Mercury finished with 23 assists on 32 made baskets — their second consecutive game with 20 or more dishes.
As a team, the Mercury shot 52-percent from the floor.
Suffocating Defense
During the month of September, the Mercury has made a point to reconnect with what won them a WNBA Championship a year ago: defense.
Rotations have been better, weak-side help has improved and one-on-one assignments have yielded positive results — most recently evidenced by holding the Stars to three quarters with 12 points or less Saturday.
Phoenix held San Antonio to zero players in double figures in scoring, 30-percent shooting, and .08-percent shooting from the three-point line (1-of-12). They also out-rebounded the Stars 38-32.
Phoenix returns home to face the Sparks on Friday, September 11.
