3 Things We Learned From #MercAtSun
After what could be considered their biggest victory of the year Sunday over the Minnesota Lynx at home, Phoenix made its only visit to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut Thursday where they haven’t won since June 29, 2013.
That would change, however, when Leilani Mitchell happened.
With no time left on the clock, Mitchell drilled a clutch three-pointer (her second game-winner of the season) to give the Mercury a much-needed win on the road. Phoenix is now 17-11 on the year.
Here’s what we learned from #MercAtSun:
Leilani’s Night
Leilani Mitchell has been in a minor shooting slump over the past few games, but she certainly broke out of that against the Sun.
Mitchell tallied 16 points, three dimes and had a game-high +/- of +14.
Most notably, she hit four three-pointers — none of which bigger than the one coming with zero time left on the clock to give the Mercury the win.
Solving the Road Woes
The Mercury should feel confident that they kicked off their three-game road trip in Connecticut with a victory, especially since they’ve uncharacteristically struggled on the road somewhat this season.
In fact, Phoenix will close the regular season with five-of-seven games on the road. Prior to Thursday, Phoenix was 5-7 (.417) on the road in 2015. Additionally, Thursday marked the beginning of the second three-game trip this season for Phoenix (they went 1-2 on a three-game trip in June).
Needless to say, as the season winds down and the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference is still within reach, these wins on the road are imperative.
Speaking of Winning…
Similar to the Mercury’s game against the Lynx on Sunday, the team found themselves in find-a-way-to-win-no-matter-what mode Thursday.
That is to say, they didn’t exactly play their best basketball of the season against the Sun, but they gutted it out. After leading by double-digits in the first half, they were actually down by double-digits after a 31-15 quarter in favor of Connecticut.
The victory, though, marked their fifth game of the year where they’ve came back from being down by 10 or more points to win.
DeWanna Bonner had another stellar game with 26 points, six rebounds and three assists on 7-of-12 shooting. Brittney Griner tallied her second consecutive double-double with a dominant 14 points and 13 boards to go along with three blocks. Monique Currie was big in the first half en route to scoring 13 points.
They’ll need to rest up quickly; Phoenix plays the Mystics in Washington in less than 24 hours.
