On the surface, Friday night’s game at home against the Los Angeles Sparks doesn’t mean very much.

After all, playoff positions are already set; the Mercury opens the postseason at home against the Shock and the Sparks debut on the road in Minnesota.

But none of that mattered to the Mercury as they beat the Sparks 70-65.

Monique Currie finished with a season-high 22 points on 9-of-13 (.692) shooting from the field — her first 20-point game of the season. Brittney Griner scored 16 points, and Candice Dupree added 12.

Phoenix’s 70-65 win over Los Angeles was significant for a few reasons:

Hey, Brittney Griner Dunked Again (!!)

Brittney Griner recorded her seventh career dunk at the 7:23 mark of the third quarter. It marked her third dunk of the season.

There have now been 13 dunks in WNBA history and Griner has seven of them in 87 career games played.

Griner finished the game with 16 points and five rebounds.

Reaching a Milestone

Phoenix notched their 20th win of the season Friday night, marking the first time the Mercury have recorded consecutive 20-win seasons in the 19-year history of the franchise. (Source: Mercury Communications)

It was the fifth 20-win season in team history. Phoenix joins New York, Chicago and Minnesota as 20-win teams in the WNBA this season.

Home is Where the Heart Is

Phoenix closed the home portion of their schedule Friday night with their 13th home win.

The 13-4 home record for the Mercury is the second-best in team history and will tie them for the best home record in the WNBA this season.

Phoenix is 29-5 (.853) at home over the last two seasons—tops in the WNBA. Minnesota finished the 2015 home portion of their schedule 13-4 and New York and Chicago are each 12-4 (.750) with one home game remaining.
