3 Things We Learned From #MercVsStars
Home is where the heart is. Or, at least, where winning happens.
After three-straight games on the road, the Mercury opened a stretch that will see the team play five of their next seven games at US Airways Center. Certainly, this is a good thing; Phoenix is now 19-2 at home since the start of 2014 after beating San Antonio 82-75 Tuesday night.
In many ways, the Mercury played their best basketball of the season. In fact, for the first time this year, Phoenix led from start to finish. Additionally, their 28 first quarter points was the most scored in any quarter this season for the team.
With the win, Phoenix has won eight of their last 10 games against San Antonio.
Here’s what we learned from #MercVsStars:
DeWanna Bonner: 3rd on the Mercury’s All-Time Scoring List
With a layup at the 5:33 mark of the third quarter, Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner passed Mercury great Jennifer Gillom for 3rd on the franchise all-time scoring list.
Gillom scored 2,793 points after a six-year career with Phoenix starting in 1997. Diana Taurasi (6,722) and Penny Taylor (3,275) currently hold the top spots on the all-time scoring list.
Bonner finished the night with 13 points in Tuesday’s game and now has amassed 2,803 total career points. She has scored in double-figures all nine games this season.
“I love it here,” Bonner said. “This is my home. I love the fans, I love my teammates, the organization is great. To be on that list is just amazing. There are some great people that are on that list. It will probably be hard to catch one and two [laughs].
“No, it’s not all about that, but to be up there is just great. I have been here long enough so it’s a great feeling.”

The Mercury’s Offense Finally Clicked
Phoenix shot 59.6-percent (34-of-57) from the field Tuesday night, the fifth-highest field goal percentage in a game in team history and the highest since August 6, 2010 vs. San Antonio (60.3-percent, 36-of-63).
It also marked the highest field goal percentage by any WNBA team in a game this season and the highest by any WNBA team since Minnesota shot 63.8-percent on June 17, 2014. (Source: John Steinmiller, Mercury Communications)
Additionally, Phoenix set season highs for points in the paint (50), field goal percentage (59.6%) and points (85, previously 81, June 14 vs. Minnesota).
“I thought that it was a step in the right direction,” Sandy Brondello said after the game. “You know, are we where we need to be? No, but it’s how we need to play and now we just got to do it consistently and just get in to that kind of rhythm. So I’m happy with the effort near the end, but San Antonio, they got some scorers and they made some tough shots there in the end. But we had a little bit more composure and we finished.”
Brittney Griner’s Home Debut Was a Huge Success
When Brittney Griner is in a rhythm, there is no other player (or team) in the league that can stop her.
Case in point: Tuesday’s game against San Antonio.
Griner scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds, four blocked shots, and three assists in 33 minutes.
Indeed, there’s a direct correlation with Griner’s presence and the fact that the Mercury set a season high in points in the paint. More than her gaudy stats, however, Griner dramatically impacted the game on both ends of the floor which created further opportunities for her teammates.
“The X-Factor is just amazing,” Brittney Griner said. “They gave us a lot of energy tonight and we were pumped. We wanted to get a win and start building off of this win.”
