In a back-and-forth game, the Mercury fell to the San Antonio Stars 76-71 Thursday night in spite of 17 points and nine rebounds from DeWanna Bonner. Phoenix is now 3-4 on the season.

The Mercury started slow with just 27 points in the first half, but clawed their way back in the game with 27 points in the third quarter alone. San Antonio used a 28-17 fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Thursday marked the second game for the Mercury on their three-game road trip which concludes in Minnesota on Saturday (with the debut of Brittney Griner) on ESPN2.

This was also the second match-up of the season between the Stars and Mercury and the second of three games between the two teams in the month of June. Phoenix had won four straight in the series, and has won seven of the last nine games overall against the Stars.

Here are three things we learned from #MercAtStars:

DeWanna Bonner’s All-Around Game

We knew DeWanna Bonner could score and defend, but she’s proving this season that she can do SO much more.

Bonner finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks in 34 minutes against the Stars — certainly WNBA All-Star worthy.

She is now just 21 points shy of Jennifer Gillom for third-place on the Mercury’s all-time scoring list.

Wild, Wild West

Prior to Thursday’s game, the Mercury was a perfect 3-0 vs. Western Conference opponents this season.

In fact, Phoenix was the only team in the WNBA to be undefeated in conference play (Phoenix is 0-3 against Eastern Conference foes this season).

The Mercury will have a chance to improve upon their 3-1 Western Conference record against the Lynx Saturday.

Rebound, Rebound, Rebound

As a team, the Mercury was out-rebounded by the Stars 48-30 on Thursday.

Indeed, as the season continues, they’ll need to figure out a way to be more active on the glass as a committee — especially when they aren’t hitting consistent shots from the outside.

Brittney Griner makes her season debut Saturday against the Lynx, and that should inspire a major boost in terms of rebounding the ball (along with many other things).
