Bonner Named Western Conference Player of The Week
PHOENIX – Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner today was named Western Conference Player of the Week for June 5 – June 14, the league announced today. This marks the fourth career WNBA Player of the Week honor for Bonner, and her first such award since September 2, 2012. For the four games during the first week of the season, Bonner averaged 19.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals as the Mercury kicked off the season with a 2-2 (.500) record.
Bonner has scored 21 or more points and grabbed six or more rebounds in three of the first four games of the season. She matched her season-high with 22 points in Sunday’s win over previously undefeated Minnesota, including seven rebounds and a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. Phoenix extended its franchise-record home winning streak to 22 games (including five postseason games), dating back to 2014. Bonner also scored 22 points and grabbed six boards on Thursday at New York.
In the season-opener on June 5 at US Airways Center, the Alabama native scored 21 points as the Mercury celebrated the 2014 Championship team and kicked off the 2015 season with a win over San Antonio.
Bonner currently ranks third in the WNBA and tops among Western Conference players in scoring and is tied for tenth in the league in steals. She is also second in the league in minutes played, averaging 34.8 minutes per game.
The 6-foot-4 forward is in her seventh WNBA season and was selected with the fifth overall pick by Phoenix in the 2009 WNBA Draft out of Auburn University. She has spent her entire career with the Mercury, winning two championships and three WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year Awards. She also picked up WNBA Western Conference Player of the Month Awards on September 4, 2011; June 3, 2012 and September 2, 2012.
