Monique Currie Named WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week
PHOENIX – Phoenix Mercury guard Monique Currie today was named Western Conference Player of the Week for September7 – 13, the league announced today. This marks the first career WNBA Player of the Week honor for Currie in her ten-year WNBA career. The Mercury, who won 20 games behind an ensemble cast of unselfish stars, were one of two WNBA teams this season to see three different players collect a Player of the Week award. DeWanna Bonner (June 15) and Brittney Griner (August 10) also picked up WNBA Player of the Week awards this season for the Phoenix Mercury.
For the final two games during the regular season, Currie averaged 24.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist. Currie will enter the 2015 WNBA Playoffs on Thursday at 7 p.m. at US Airways Center with the hot hand as she is shooting 61-percent from the field over her last three games.
The 6-foot guard scored a season-high 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting in Sunday’s 91-87 loss at Tulsa and, in Friday’s 70-65 win vs. Los Angeles, Currie scored 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Currie finished the 2015 regular season with 14 double-digit scoring efforts and was the only player on the Mercury roster to start all 34 games of the season.
A graduate of Duke University, Currie just wrapped up her first season with the Mercury after signing a free agent contract on February 5. She finished the season with averages of 9.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. Currie has played in 136 consecutive WNBA games dating back to the 2012 season.
Currie and the Phoenix Mercury will begin the 2015 WNBA Playoffs on Thursday at US Airways Center as Game 1 against the Tulsa Shock will tipoff at 7 p.m. Single-game tickets for Game 1 of the Mercury’s opening round series are on sale now at PhoenixMercury.com or by calling 602-252-WNBA and start at $12.
