Mercury Adds Three Players in 2014 Draft

Posted: April 16, 2015 PHOENIX - The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury made four selections in tonight’s WNBA Draft. Isabelle Harrison, a 6-foot-3 center from the University of Tennessee was the team’s first-round selection, going 12th overall. Phoenix used two second round picks to select Alex Harden, a 5-foot-11 guard of Wichita State University taken 18th overall and, Zofia Hruscakova, a 6-foot-3 center from Slovakia with the 24th overall pick. The team used its final selection (36th overall) to select Promise Amukamara, a 5-foot-8 guard from Arizona State University who is a native of Glendale, Ariz.

Over her four-year career at the University of Tennessee, Harrison owns career averages of 9.6 points and 6.95 rebounds. The center still picked up All-SEC First Team and Honorable Mention All-American (AP and WBCA) honors despite an ACL tear suffered in her right knee on February 15 that caused her to miss the remainder of the season. A native of Nashville, Tenn., Harrison will not play the 2015 WNBA season while rehabilitating from the injury.

Harrison recorded 14 double-figure scoring games as a senior and had 18 double-doubles her junior year. She leaves the school with a career field goal percentage of 50.4-percent and led the SEC in that category, shooting 57.7-percent as a junior.

Harden, a native of Springfield, Ill., averaged 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists to lead Wichita State to its third-straight NCAA Tournament. She was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and to the All-Defensive Team. As a sophomore and junior, Harden was named Defensive Player of the Year for the conference. She leaves the school with 1,708 points, the most in school history. While with the Shockers, she was named the MVC Tournament Most Outstanding Player three times.

Hruscakova averaged 4.1 points, 3.6 rebounds while shooting 46-percent from the field this season in the Euroleague for Good Angels Kosice in Slovakia. She was the only international selection by the Mercury in tonight’s draft.

Amukamara appeared in all 131 games of her college career, making 97 career starts. She averaged 10.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in her senior season while shooting 31.6-percent from the three-point line. She also picked up All-Pac-12 honors this year. As a junior and senior, Amukamara was named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team and finishes her college career ranked 6th on ASU’s all-time steals list with 209. Amukamara’s brother, Prince, plays cornerback for the New York Giants.

Sandy Brondello, 2014 WNBA Coach of the Year, leads 2014 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Brittney Griner, All-Star Candice Dupree and three-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year DeWanna Bonner as the Mercury open defense of their title on Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. against the San Antonio Stars at US Airways Center.
