PHOENIX – Spanish guard Marta Xargay (pronounced ZAR-gay) reported to the Phoenix Mercury today following her stint with her national team in the 2015 EuroBasket Women’s competition in Hungary. Xargay helped her team to a third-place finish in the competition, averaging 9.6 points, 2.4 assists, 2.3 rebounds and a team-high 1.6 steals during the 10-game competition that ended Sunday. The WNBA rookie will be in uniform this Sunday in Los Angeles as the Mercury face the Sparks at 2 p.m. at STAPLES Center.
The 24-year-old guard saved her best performance of the 2015 Eurobasket Women’s competition for the third-place game last Sunday against Belarus. She scored 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from the three-point line. She added four rebounds and four assists in that game.
Originally signed as a free agent by the Mercury on February 11, 2015, Xargay has spent the last six seasons playing with Perfumerias Avenida Baloncesto in the Spanish Liga Femenina—the top women’s professional league in Spain. The 5-foot-11 guard is a member of the Spanish national team that won a silver medal in the 2014 FIBA World Championships for Women in Turkey. She averaged 6.7 points and 2.7 assists in the tournament.
In a corresponding roster move, the Mercury waived guard Tess Madgen. The Australian native is a WNBA rookie and played in eight games this year with the Mercury. The current roster stands at 12 players.
