Q&A with Newest Member of the Mercury Danielle Robinson

When you first heard the news, what was your reaction to being traded to the Phoenix Mercury?

When I first heard that it was even a possibility to head to Phoenix, I was excited. When I was told that it was actually going to happen, I was stoked. I’m humbled, I’m grateful. I’m so thankful to the Phoenix Mercury for a fresh start and a new beginning.

You have gone head-to-head against Diana Taurasi many times between the WNBA and Euroleague. What is it going to be like teaming up with her on the Mercury?

Well, I don’t think I can express the amount of happiness I get from knowing that the only time I’ll have to guard Diana now is possibly in practice! We have had some battles for sure in the WNBA and Euroleague. To now be teaming up together is a dream. Everyone knows how great of a player DT is and I’m thrilled to be sharing the court with her.

As a veteran and an All-Star in this league, what do you think you bring to the team and what are you looking forward to?

To the team I think I bring multiple things. One, just being another vet leader. Obviously, DT is the leader of the team but I think my experience and knowledge of the game is going to complement her and add a ton to the team. Also, a defensive presence for sure. I take pride in being able to get stops defensively and that starts with the point guard who is at the head of the defense. And, of course my speed and scoring ability as a point guard. It will be fun to get out and really push the tempo and run with this team.

What does it mean to get an opportunity to take the court with such a unique talent like Brittney Griner?

You know, I had the opportunity to compete against Brittney in college for 2 years so I saw how she has the ability to change the game on both ends of the floor early. She has been and will continue to be a dominant player and I’m glad she won’t be altering my shots anymore now that we are on the same team!

What excites you about being able to play for Coach Sandy Brondello?

Everything excites me about playing for Coach Sandy. She has been the perfect fit for Phoenix. I’ve heard nothing but great things about how she runs the team and how great of a coach she is, so I look forward to being her extension on the court.

From a visitor’s point of view, what is it like to play in front of the X-Factor and what will it be like to be the home team here in Phoenix?

From a visitor’s standpoint, Phoenix was absolutely one of the toughest places to play. The X-Factor shows up in full force every single night and the way the team feeds off of them is incredible. I’m looking forward to running out in front of those fans night in and night out. Their energy is contagious.

It’s early, but what are your expectations for the 2017 Phoenix Mercury?

It is early, but of course my expectations for this team are to contend for a title. Phoenix has a winning culture and a winning atmosphere and with a full and healthy roster, we have a real chance.
