About Michele Timms

Aussie sensation Michele Timms became the second player in Phoenix Mercury history after being awarded to the team during the league’s 1997 initial allocation. The high-energy point guard played five seasons (1997-2001) in Phoenix and currently ranks fourth on the franchise’s all-time assists list and fifth in steals.

Timms averaged 7.5 points, 4.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals in her 116 career regular season games with the Mercury and helped lead Phoenix to playoff appearances in three of its first four seasons, including a 1998 WNBA Finals appearance.

During the inaugural 1997 season, Timms ranked second in the league in both steals and assists, averaging 12.1 points, 5.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. That year, she set franchise records for steals in a season (71) and season steals average (2.6), records that still stand today. In 1999, Timms was selected to play in the WNBA’s first-ever All-Star Game.

Timms, a Melbourne, Victoria native, and the first Australian to play in the WNBA and earn an All-Star selection, was a three-time Olympian with the Opals, winning a silver medal in 2000 and bronze in 1996.

Timms was recently announced as an inductee to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2024 and is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (2008), FIBA Hall of Fame (2016), Sport Australia Hall of Fame (2003) and Basketball Australia Hall of Fame (2006).

Following her playing career, Timms returned to the Mercury as an assistant coach (2002, 2005) and also a TV and radio analyst (2002). On June 6, 2006, Timms joined Jennifer Gillom, Cheryl Miller and Bridget Pettis as the first inductees into the Mercury’s Ring of Honor.
