About Penny Taylor

Penny Taylor helped lead the Phoenix Mercury to three WNBA Championships (2007, 2009, 2014) and joins Diana Taurasi as the only player in franchise history to play on all three championship teams. Selected No. 1 overall by Phoenix in the 2004 Cleveland Dispersal Draft, Taylor spent 10 of her 13 WNBA seasons with the Mercury from 2004 to 2016.

Taylor ranks in the top five of nearly every statistical category in the franchise record books. In addition to ranking first in free-throw percentage, second in three-point percentage and third in overall field goal percentage, she is second in assists, third in steals, third in three-pointers made, fourth in points and fifth in rebounds. During her decorated career with the Mercury, Taylor earned two WNBA All-Star selections (2007, 2011) and was named All-WNBA First Team in 2007 and All-WNBA Second Team in 2011.

The Melbourne, Victoria, native also enjoyed a celebrated international career as a three-time Olympian with the Opals, leading the team to two Olympic silver medals and a 2006 World Championship title for which she was named tournament MVP.

After her 2016 retirement as a player, Taylor served as Mercury’s Director of Player Development and Performance in 2017 and then as an assistant coach in 2019. On July 9, 2017, she became the fifth Mercury legend to have her jersey number retired to the rafters.

Taylor was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2023.
